I'm sure I'm going to sound like an idiot, but heres is a question. My friend Cody (C-dog), made me a live CD with Ubuntu 7.04, but when I put it in, I forgot that Linux won't let u use wireless, unless u have a specific card. I don't have one of those sepcial cards, but Cody told me a way to do it. He didn't tell me what exactly what to do, just something about how I need to download some drivers, and install them. WHat do I need to do? He also told me that I can do it all from the Live CD but how I don't know since I can't use the internet with it, and we have nowhere to place an Ethernet cable in my room. Does anyone know what I can do? Thnks, Mike
In order to setup wireless on a linux system be it live or installed, you need to download and install Ndiswrapper. Ndiswrapper takes a Windows .INF or .SYS driver file and imports it into the data base. There are a serves of things to do including:
Making sure ndiswrapper is installed and making sure the proper utilities like wireless-utils are installed
make sure you import the right driver file by doing
ndiswrapper -i driver.inf
you can check that the driver is install by doing
ndiswrapper -l
Ubuntu already comes with ndiswrapper, but later versions or earlier versions may need to be used. Do a google for the wifi card, because sometimes you may find articles on specific how tos with all commands. You also want to look at the ndiswrapper page for supported cards.
